In Safari, the web browser, For favourite sites, you can save a link as a desktop icon. (See image)
step 1 open the Action button, then step 2 Add to Home Screen and tap Add (you can edit the name to simplify or shorten it).
Bookmark or Reading List
In the same Action button window you can save the address to Bookmarks or Reading List. Bookmarks can be a large collection with folders for topics. Good for recipes and so on. The Reading List is a simple list, best for temporary saving. Quicker to use than Bookmarks

You can see Bookmarks and Reading List in the 'Book' icon in the Safari menu - top on iPad and bottom on iPhone.
