Streaming music

Streaming services now dominating how people listen to music. They are subscription services, currently $11.99Au per month for both Apple Music and Spotify - the world's largest streaming service. Each service offers millions of tracks that can be listened to online or downloaded.

The subscriber can have an online collection of favourites, playlists, albums, and can also have part of this downloaded for playing when one does not have a wireless connection or sufficient cellular access. Cellular (phone) access is limited for most people and music is a heavy download user. See 'battery' for more information.

There are many ways to play music from a smartphone or iPad to good quality speakers. One can plug the device into most amplifiers, but doing it over a wireless network or to bluetooth speakers (as modern cars do) gives a far better experience. There are of course numerous bluetooth headsets and earbuds like Airpods for for personal listening. Being able to carry around or access a large music collection in one's car is a very liberating.

Music services such as Sonos provide high quality speakers that can complement your TV set and play in multiple speakers around a home. See Wireless speaker systems.
