Flip your finger up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the Control Center for quick access to useful functions. (Additional ones on an iPhone are Flashlight and Calculator).
In particular: timer, camera, wireless, do not disturb, play functions.
Most useful is AirDrop. Switch it to receive from Everyone and from the Action button nearby people with Apple devices can air-drop all sorts of files directly to you. Similarly, you can send via AirDrop to others.
It is useful to be familiar with these for quick access to useful functions.
